Debut Articles

The Debut is described as a "larger less twitchy airplane for combat beginners" and that is exactly what it is. It's simple to make and simple to fly, it could make a trainer if you added dihedral to the wing and kept the control surface movements reasonably low, and I have let several novices fly one on the buddy lead with no problems. If you fancy having a go at building a SPAD, I would recommend the Debut for your first go, its construction uses most of the basic SPAD methods and it is an easy flying plane.

Most of the articles below have more pictures and information that can be accessed by clicking the Article's title or the " Read more.." link

Building A Debut Wing Using 4mm Correx

2mm Correx is difficult to find in the UK. A lot of the designs you will find on the SPAD to the bone site use 2mm correx in their wing construction. Some of the designs that use 4mm correx for the wing use twin spars, such as the Debonair. This creates a rather 'squared' off airfoil shape, which does the job but could be better, this article will hopefully help you get a better airfoil shape from a 4mm Correx wing.

2mm Correx wings

We have aquired some 2mm correx and I have built our first Debut wing using it. Cutting, folding and gluing the correx was much simpler and quicker, because there is less pressure at the joints, the clamps could be removed earlier, and the whole build of the wing was generally much easier going. Here are the weight differences.

Modifying a Debut for better performance

Debuts are easy flyers and are great planes for your first combat experience, after a while though you might find yourself wanting a little more performance, a better roll rate and more speed for example. Here are a few of the things we have done to our Debut's to speed them up with out spoiling the pleasant flying characteristics.

Brenns Debut

Brendan is a member of Llannelli Model Flying Club, he is also the web master of the clubs website, I got to know Brenn through various RC forums on the internet, and supplied him with some Correx to build his first Debut, you can see him holding the finished article in the picture on the left and also some pictures of the plane during its construction below.

Derek's Debut's

Derek has a bit of a reputation as our 'Crash tester', and has got through a fair amount of Debut's in his time, he is a quick builder/repairer though and is never with out a flyable plane for combat for long. Here are some of Derek's Debut's that survived long enough to have their photo taken.

Pete's Debut's

DSCF1408.jpg (58923 bytes)Pete is a good and patient builder of ARTF kits, his planes are always clean and constructed in a neat and tidy way with all the bells and whistles you can imagine. This is his first SPAD and you can tell Pete built it, have a close look at the picture and you might be able to spot the blue aluminum anodized cup washers under the wing retaining screws. Behind the switch Pete's fitted a battery monitor, a luxury item in the SPAD world!!, also of note on this Debut is the way Pete's fitted the throttle servo, its glued to the top of the fuz with 5 minute epoxy, I'm not sure how long it'll stay on but I bet we'll know exactly when it's fallen off

Debut Video's

A collection of video's of our Debut's. These video clips will give you a reasonable idea of what a Debut will fly like, not bad for an airframe costing around £5. Registered members can upload their own videos of this design to the section below

Spare Spad

Spare Spad is the fourth Debut we made, it was made by Derek and myself and appears in the video Spad build, which you can download Here. It is called Spare Spad because we wanted a plane available for anyone to use if their own plane was destroyed in a combat mid air, and to let other club members have a go to try to get them involved, it has done this job admirably and is now a year old, it deserves this special feature because it seems to be indestructable, apart from the wings that is..............................
